About Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is extravagant in every sense — roads carved into cliff faces above an impossible blue sea, lemon groves tumbling down to fishing villages painted in shades of saffron and terracotta, and restaurants where the pasta is made the same way it was three hundred years ago. It's genuinely one of the world's most beautiful coastlines, and it knows it. Go early in the season, hire a boat to escape the tourist coaches, and eat limoncello gelato at every opportunity.
Best areas to stay in Amalfi Coast
Positano
The coast's most iconic village — pastel houses stacked vertically above a small beach, and an endless supply of Instagram perfection.
Amalfi
The historic namesake town with a magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral, a good ferry hub, and a lively piazza perfect for people-watching.
Ravello
A hilltop village above the crowds, famous for its spectacular Villa Cimbrone gardens and Villa Rufolo, host of a prestigious summer music festival.
Sorrento
A large, lively town at the northern end of the peninsula — excellent transport links to Naples, Pompeii, and Capri make it an ideal, more affordable base.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
May, June, and September are ideal — warm enough to swim, without the peak July/August crush when the coastal road becomes a slow-moving car park. Spring also brings wildflowers to the hillside paths.
How do I get around the Amalfi Coast?
The ferry service between Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and Salerno is far more scenic and often faster than the congested coastal road. Public buses run frequently but can be crowded in summer.
Which town should I base myself in?
Positano is the most photogenic and most expensive; Amalfi town offers the best transport links; Praiano is quieter and better value; Sorrento makes an excellent and more affordable base for day trips.
Is the Amalfi Coast good for hiking?
Absolutely — the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is one of Italy's most spectacular walks, traversing clifftop routes with breathtaking sea views. The Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve is another excellent option.
Is it expensive?
The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's priciest destinations, particularly in Positano. Eating at inland village trattorias rather than clifftop restaurants, and travelling by ferry rather than private boat, saves considerably.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Honestly one of the most beautiful places on earth — we hired a small boat for the day and explored sea caves and hidden coves that the tourists on the road never see. Splurging on that was the best decision of the trip.

September was perfect — warm sea, emptier restaurants, and golden light on the cliffs in the evenings. Ravello was our favourite town, particularly the garden concerts at Villa Rufolo.

★★★★☆
Stunning but be prepared for the logistics — the coastal road is truly terrifying if you're not used to it. Using ferries between Positano and Amalfi was absolutely the right call and the views from the water are even better.
