Auckland is not New Zealand's most spectacular destination — that competition is decided between Queenstown, Fiordland, and the Bay of Islands — but it is a genuinely excellent city that rewards proper attention. Built on a volcanic field of 50 cones (the highest of which, Rangitoto, is visible from the harbour), it straddles two harbours with a sailing culture so ingrained that the America's Cup felt like a civic right. The food scene is exceptional, the Waiheke Island ferry delivers world-class wine in 35 minutes, and the Northland beaches to the north are extraordinary.

Best areas to stay in Auckland

CBD & Viaduct Harbour
Auckland's waterfront hub — the America's Cup yacht marina, excellent waterfront restaurants, the Sky Tower, and the ferry terminal for Waiheke and Rangitoto island trips.
Ponsonby & Grey Lynn
Auckland's most fashionable inner suburbs — excellent independent restaurants, cafés, and boutiques along Ponsonby Road, and the best brunch culture in the city.
Waiheke Island
A 35-minute ferry from downtown — boutique wineries, beautiful beaches like Onetangi and Palm Beach, and a relaxed island lifestyle just off the city.
Devonport
A charming Victorian seaside village on the North Shore, accessible by ferry — pohutukawa trees, the naval museum, Mount Victoria summit views, and excellent cafés.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Auckland?
December to March is summer — warm (25°C+), vibrant festival scene, and the best beach weather. March to May (autumn) is considered by many the most pleasant month for the city itself. Auckland's weather is changeable year-round; always carry a light jacket.
How do I get from Auckland Airport to the city?
The SkyBus runs between Auckland Airport and the city centre (via Britomart) frequently from 4am to midnight — cheap and reliable. Taxis and Uber are more comfortable; the Northern Express bus provides a cheaper option.
Is Waiheke Island worth visiting?
Absolutely — just 35 minutes by Fullers ferry from Auckland's downtown ferry terminal. Waiheke is famous for boutique wineries (exceptional Bordeaux blends and Syrah), beautiful beaches, and olive groves. A full day trip is wonderful; overnight stays reveal a more peaceful island.
What day trips are possible from Auckland?
Waiheke Island (35 min ferry), Rangitoto volcano (45 min ferry and 2-hour summit hike), Waitomo Glowworm Caves (2.5 hours south), the Coromandel Peninsula (2 hours east), and the Northland beaches and Bay of Islands (3–4 hours north) are all excellent.
Is Auckland an expensive city?
Yes — Auckland is one of the most expensive cities in the Asia-Pacific region, comparable to Sydney. Accommodation and eating out at restaurants are costly by most international standards; however, excellent farmers' markets, food trucks, and cafés offer great value options.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Waiheke Island in January was exceptional — we cycled between three wineries on a warm summer afternoon and had the most extraordinary glass of Syrah sitting on a terrace above the Hauraki Gulf. Auckland as a stopover is absolutely worth two or three days minimum.

Rangitoto volcano hike from the ferry terminal was a brilliant half-day — the lava fields and pohutukawa forest at the summit were beautiful and strange, and the views back to Auckland across the gulf were fantastic. Great value for the ferry fare.

Devonport was a wonderful surprise — a short ferry ride from the viaduct and suddenly a Victorian seaside village with the best fish and chips we had in New Zealand. Mount Victoria summit at golden hour over the city and harbour was breathtaking.
