About Bora Bora
Bora Bora is the superlative that earns its title. The lagoon ringed by a coral reef and dominated by the extinct volcano of Mount Otemanu genuinely is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Overwater bungalows were invented here and they still feel magical.

Bora Bora is the Pacific island that all other Pacific islands are compared to — the lagoon is a graduated palette of blues and greens so vivid they look computer-generated, Mount Otemanu's volcanic core rises dramatically from the centre, and the overwater bungalows that made this destination famous deliver exactly what they promise. It is undeniably expensive and undeniably worth it; a destination where doing nothing with great intentionality reaches its apotheosis.
Best areas to stay in Bora Bora
Matira Beach
The only true public beach on Bora Bora's main island — a long strip of white sand and shallow turquoise water, free to access and genuinely beautiful.
The Lagoon
The vast protected lagoon surrounding the main island — the primary attraction for snorkelling, diving, shark and ray excursions, and overwater bungalow dreaming.
Mount Otemanu
The ancient volcanic core of the island — hiking to the base (the summit is technical) rewards with extraordinary views over the entire lagoon and neighbouring islands.
Motu Islets
The small coral islets forming the lagoon's outer barrier — home to the most luxurious overwater resort properties and accessible via boat from the main island.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Bora Bora?
May to October is the dry season — lower humidity, clearer skies, and the finest conditions for snorkelling and diving in the lagoon. November to April brings warmer temperatures with occasional rain and higher humidity.
How do I get to Bora Bora?
Fly to Tahiti-Faaa International Airport (PPT) in Papeete, then take a 50-minute domestic flight on Air Tahiti to Bora Bora Airport. Most resorts provide boat transfers to the main island or motu (small islet) properties.
Is Bora Bora only for honeymooners?
Predominantly, yes — the overwater bungalow resorts are intensely romantic and expensive. However, more affordable options exist at guesthouses on the main island, and snorkelling, shark/ray feeding tours, and hiking appeal to anyone.
What can I do in Bora Bora besides lie on the beach?
Snorkelling and diving in the lagoon (nurse sharks and rays are remarkably tame), shark and ray feeding tours by boat, 4WD tours of the main island and WWII gun emplacements, and kayaking around the motu islets are all excellent.
Is it possible to visit Bora Bora on a budget?
Relatively — staying at a pension (family guesthouse) on the main island, eating at local roulottes (food trucks), and renting a bicycle reduces costs dramatically compared to the major overwater resort prices.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Bora Bora is the most beautiful place I have ever been or expect to be — waking up in an overwater bungalow and stepping directly into water that is somehow simultaneously transparent and that specific blue was a moment I will carry forever.

★★★★★
The shark and ray snorkelling tour in the lagoon was extraordinary — nurse sharks drift past within arm's reach and the rays are completely gentle. The lagoon colour in afternoon light is genuinely unreal. Worth every penny.
Mark A. · September 2023
★★★★☆
Stayed at a lovely pension rather than the big resorts and still had a magical experience — Matira Beach is extraordinary, the snorkelling from the shore is excellent, and renting a bicycle around the island was a perfect day. The sunset over Mount Otemanu is staggering.
