About Cyprus

Cyprus is the Mediterranean's third-largest island and one of its most rewarding. The Troodos Mountains offer cool retreats and Byzantine monasteries. Paphos has a UNESCO-listed archaeological park. The sea is the warmest in the Mediterranean and the Cypriot meze is the best argument for staying at the table for hours.

Cyprus is an island of layered contradictions that somehow blend into a coherent and deeply hospitable whole — Aphrodite was supposedly born from its sea foam, Crusader castles perch on Troodos mountain peaks, and the divided capital of Nicosia remains the world's last partitioned city. The beaches of Ayia Napa and Protaras are genuinely beautiful, the wine trails through Commandaria country produce unique wines, and the village life of the Troodos foothills offers a Cyprus that the beach resorts don't reveal.

Best areas to stay in Cyprus

Paphos
The legendary birthplace of Aphrodite — a UNESCO archaeological park of extraordinary Roman mosaics, the Rock of Aphrodite coastal site, and the most culturally rich resort town on the island.
Limassol & Wine Villages
Cyprus's most cosmopolitan city, with a lively old town and the gateway to the Commandaria wine region in the Troodos foothills.
Ayia Napa & Protaras
The eastern peninsula's resort coast — the famous Fig Tree Bay (one of Europe's finest beaches), turquoise water, and the most developed beach infrastructure on the island.
Troodos Mountains
A cool retreat above the coastal heat — Byzantine churches with UNESCO-listed frescoes, the Caledonia Waterfall walk, and traditional Cypriot village life.

Getting to Cyprus

Flights
Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO) airports are served by direct flights from London Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, and most UK regional airports with British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, and TUI.
From London
~4.5 hours direct from London

Getting around
Hire car is essential for exploring beyond the immediate resort areas — public buses are limited and infrequent outside major towns. Driving is on the left (same as the UK) making it very manageable for British visitors.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Cyprus?
April to June and September to October offer ideal beach temperatures without peak summer's intense heat (July/August can reach 40°C). Winter is mild and perfect for exploring archaeological sites and the Troodos mountains.
Is Cyprus an EU country?
Southern Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus) is an EU member state using the euro. Northern Cyprus is under Turkish administration and not recognised by the EU; UK citizens can visit both sides but should note the different regulations.
Can I cross between southern and northern Cyprus?
Yes — crossing points between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkish-administered Northern Cyprus are open to tourists. The crossings at Ledra Street in Nicosia and Agios Dometios are most commonly used. Check entry requirements for Northern Cyprus before crossing.
What is Commandaria wine?
Cyprus's famous sweet dessert wine — one of the oldest named wines in the world, produced in the Troodos foothills since ancient times. Visit the Commandaria wine region for cellar tastings and traditional village experiences.
What archaeological sites should I visit in Cyprus?
Paphos Archaeological Park (a UNESCO site containing stunning Roman floor mosaics), the Tombs of the Kings, Kourion (spectacular clifftop Greco-Roman theatre), and the Neolithic settlement at Choirokoitia are the four essential sites.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

The Paphos mosaics are genuinely extraordinary — Roman floors in open archaeological shelters with some of the finest Hellenistic imagery I've seen outside Athens. The town is charming and the beach at Coral Bay on a spring day was perfect.

Cyprus in October is ideal — the sea is still beautifully warm from summer and Fig Tree Bay was easily the best beach of the year. The village wine trail through Commandaria country was a lovely surprise and the local Zivania spirit should be approached with caution.

Michael D. · October 2023
★★★★★

Drove up into the Troodos Mountains on a hot May day and the cool air and Byzantine church frescoes were a revelation. The painted churches of the mountain villages are genuinely extraordinary — most are unlocked and you have them entirely to yourself.
