Hoi An is the most beautiful small town in Southeast Asia and it wears its beauty with a particular grace — the Ancient Town's yellow-washed merchant houses glow in the lantern light every evening, the Thu Bon River carries fishing boats past tailors' shops where a custom suit can be made in 48 hours, and the food is so good that Vietnam's culinary experts consider it a pilgrimage destination. The white sand beach at An Bang is 5km away. Arrive by bike and stay for as long as you possibly can.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Hoi An?
February to July offers the best weather — warm, relatively dry, and ideal for beach and cycling. The rainy season (October–November) brings flooding to the Ancient Town but also a melancholy beauty and very few tourists. August is peak season and hot.
What food must I try in Hoi An?
Cao lầu (thick noodles with pork, which can only be made authentically with water from the town's ancient wells), white rose dumplings (bánh bao vac), and Hoi An's famous bánh mì (regarded by many as Vietnam's finest) are the three unmissable local dishes.
Can I have clothes made in Hoi An?
Yes — Hoi An's tailoring trade is famous and legitimate. A well-made dress or suit requires 2–4 fittings over 2–3 days and costs a fraction of Western prices. Go to reputable shops with good reviews, bring reference photos, and allow enough time for alterations.
Is Hoi An Ancient Town pedestrianised?
The core of the Ancient Town is closed to motorised vehicles at peak hours (evening), making it best explored on foot or by bicycle. The surrounding area is busier with traffic — renting a bicycle is the ideal way to reach the beaches and countryside.
How do I get to Hoi An from Da Nang airport?
Da Nang International Airport is the nearest, about 30km away — a taxi or Grab ride takes 30–45 minutes and costs very little. Hue is also reachable via a spectacular mountain pass (the Hải Vân Pass) for those combining the two cities.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Hoi An completely stole my heart — the evening lantern lighting in the Ancient Town is magical, the cao lầu from the market stall was the best bowl of anything I've eaten in months, and we spent a whole morning cycling through rice fields to the beach.

The tailors produce genuinely beautiful work if you give them proper time — I had a linen suit made in three days with two fittings for about £60 and it's still my favourite jacket. Spend evenings in the old town and mornings on the beach.

The cooking class at a local family restaurant was the highlight of our time in Hoi An — learning to make white rose dumplings and cao lầu from scratch with the family's grandmother was a beautiful cultural experience. An Bang beach was gorgeous in the evenings.
