About Jamaica
Jamaica has more personality per square mile than almost anywhere on earth. Bob Marley's birthplace, the birthplace of reggae and dancehall, home of jerk chicken cooked over pimento wood. The Blue Mountains produce the world's most expensive coffee. Dunn's River Falls is pure joy.

Jamaica is the Caribbean island with the most concentrated personality — reggae music didn't just come from here, it emerged from the landscape itself, from the Blue Mountains rising dramatically from the coast, from the waterfall-fed rivers and the extraordinary food culture (jerk chicken cooked over pimento wood is a flavour with no international equivalent) and from a warmth and creativity in the Jamaican people that is almost tangible. It's more complex than most Caribbean islands and significantly more rewarding for those who engage with it properly.
Best areas to stay in Jamaica
Negril
Jamaica's most laid-back resort town — Seven Mile Beach is one of the Caribbean's great stretches of sand, and Rick's Café cliff-jumping at sunset is a classic Jamaica experience.
Montego Bay
The main tourist hub and airport gateway — Hip Strip resort area, Doctor's Cave Beach, and the best access to resort excursions across the island.
Port Antonio
Jamaica's most scenically dramatic corner — the Blue Lagoon, the Reach Falls waterfall, Frenchman's Cove beach, and a quiet authenticity that makes it many repeat visitors' favourite.
Kingston
Jamaica's complex, vibrant capital — the Bob Marley Museum, the National Gallery, Devon House ice cream, and the most authentic Jamaican food and music scene.

Flights
Sangster International Airport (MBJ) near Montego Bay receives direct flights from London Gatwick and Manchester with British Airways, TUI, and Virgin Atlantic. Norman Manley Airport (KIN) in Kingston has fewer direct UK services.

Getting around
Taxis (JUTA licensed taxis are recommended over unlicensed operators) and pre-booked transfers are the safest transport options; route taxis (shared) are the local system but require more local knowledge; hire car gives greatest freedom.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Jamaica?
December to April is the dry season — the finest weather for beaches and outdoor activities. The tourist peak is December–January. The wet season (May–November) includes hurricane risk from August–October; the shoulder months offer good deals.
Which part of Jamaica should I visit?
Montego Bay has the most resort development and the best airlift from the UK; Negril has the most famous beach (Seven Mile Beach) and a relaxed atmosphere; Kingston is the cultural capital for music, art, and food; Port Antonio is the least touristy and most authentically beautiful.
Is Jamaica safe for tourists?
The tourist resort areas (Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios) are generally well-secured; common sense precautions apply. Jamaica has a high crime rate in some urban areas and certain parts of Kingston. The FCDO advice should be reviewed and resort security guidance followed.
What food must I try in Jamaica?
Jerk chicken and pork (from a proper roadside jerk stand, not a hotel restaurant), ackee and saltfish (the national dish for breakfast), pepper pot soup, festivals (sweet fried dumplings), and patties from Juici Patties are the essential Jamaican eating experiences.
Can I visit Bob Marley's birthplace from Kingston?
Yes — Nine Mile in St Ann parish (Bob Marley's birthplace and mausoleum) is accessible from Kingston or Ocho Rios. The Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road in Kingston is excellent and more easily accessed for most visitors.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Seven Mile Beach in February was paradise — the warmest, clearest water I've swum in and jerk chicken from a roadside stand at sunset for less than £5. Port Antonio for our last two days was even better — entirely different, quieter, and genuinely spectacular scenery.

Jamaica has an infectious energy that no other Caribbean island matches — the music everywhere, the warmth of people, and the jerk experience at a proper Boston Bay stand was a revelation. Rick's Café cliff-jumping at sunset was brilliant fun.

★★★★★
The Blue Lagoon near Port Antonio was extraordinary — the thermal mixing of cold freshwater and warm saltwater creates the most extraordinary colour, and you can feel the temperature change as you swim in different spots. The Reach Falls the same day was spectacular.
