About Lombok
Lombok is what Bali was before the world discovered it. The Gili Islands have no motorised vehicles, remarkable snorkelling, and a Caribbean vibe. Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, offers one of Southeast Asia's great multi-day treks. The south coast beaches are spectacular and still uncrowded.

Lombok is the island that Bali was before it was discovered — equally beautiful, dramatically less developed, and with the added drama of the Rinjani volcano rising to 3,726m and offering one of the most rewarding multi-day treks in Southeast Asia. The Gili Islands just offshore are genuinely idyllic and car-free, and the southern coast's Kuta area (no relation to Bali's) serves up surf breaks and empty beaches that feel like a privilege. Come now while the silence is still real.
Best areas to stay in Lombok
Senggigi & North Lombok
The most developed resort area on Lombok's west coast — a long stretch of beachfront hotels, restaurants, and the closest gateway to the Gili Islands.
Gili Trawangan
The most popular Gili island — excellent dive sites (sea turtles are virtually guaranteed), beach bars, excellent restaurants, and the quintessential no-motor-vehicle island experience.
Mount Rinjani
Indonesia's second-highest volcano — the crater lake (Segara Anak) is one of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary landscapes, accessible via demanding but rewarding multi-day treks.
Kuta Lombok & South Coast
Spectacular south coast beaches and surf breaks — Selong Belanak, Mawun, and the increasingly developed Kuta area offer some of the most beautiful coastline in Indonesia.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Lombok?
May to October is the dry season — ideal conditions for the Rinjani trek, beach time, and diving. November to April is the wet season, with December–January bringing the most rainfall. The dry season is distinctly the better time to visit.
Do I need a visa for Indonesia (Lombok)?
UK citizens can obtain a free 30-day Visa on Arrival at major entry points including Lombok International Airport, extendable for a further 30 days. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months' validity.
What are the Gili Islands?
Three tiny coral-fringed islands off Lombok's northwest coast — Gili Trawangan (the liveliest, best diving), Gili Air (quieter balance of beach and social life), and Gili Meno (the most secluded). No motor vehicles on any island.
How do I climb Mount Rinjani?
A Rinjani trek requires a licensed guide and permits from the Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru or Sembalun. The standard 3-day/2-night trek to the crater rim and lake is a serious undertaking requiring good fitness and proper equipment.
Is Lombok better than Bali?
They offer different experiences — Lombok has fewer tourists, more dramatic volcanic scenery, and feels more authentic in many areas. Bali has better infrastructure, more cultural experiences, and a more developed food and wellness scene. Many visitors choose to split their time.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The Rinjani crater lake at dawn after a tough two-day climb was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life — the turquoise lake inside an active volcanic crater with the sunrise touching the rim is pure natural magnificence. Worth every step.

Gili Air struck the perfect balance — beautiful snorkelling with sea turtles right off the beach, relaxed enough that I could read all day but enough life in the evening to feel sociable. The no-motorbike rule makes it genuinely peaceful.

Kuta Lombok's south coast beaches are extraordinary and almost empty compared to anything in Bali — we hired scooters and discovered different perfect bays every day. The surf at Selong Belanak was excellent for intermediates and the sunsets were spectacular.
