About Mallorca
Mallorca long ago outgrew the package-holiday reputation. The Serra de Tramuntana mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Deya and Valldemossa are genuinely beautiful medieval villages. The northeastern coves have water rivalling the Caribbean. And Palma is a genuinely great city.

Mallorca rewards those who look beyond the Magaluf reputation and into the island's genuine soul — the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site of dramatic limestone peaks and century-old olive groves, the north coast around Formentor is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular stretches, and Palma de Mallorca is a European city with extraordinary architecture, cathedral, and food culture that most visitors arriving at the airport never bother to explore. The coves of the southeast are quietly magnificent.
Best areas to stay in Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca
Mallorca's sophisticated capital — the magnificent Gothic cathedral La Seu, the Almudaina Palace, a thriving tapas bar scene, and the best boutique shopping in the Balearics.
Serra de Tramuntana
The UNESCO-listed mountain range along the northwest coast — dramatic limestone peaks, stone-walled terraces, traditional villages like Valldemossa and Deià, and excellent hiking.
Alcúdia & North
The historic walled town of Alcúdia, the long sandy beach of Platja d'Alcúdia, and the untouched Albufera marshland — one of the most appealing areas of the island.
Southeast Coves
The most beautiful beaches on the island — Cala Mondragó, Cala d'Or, and the famous Es Trenc natural beach, all offering clear turquoise water in protected coves.

Getting around
Hire car is strongly recommended for exploring beyond the resort areas; buses connect the main towns; Palma has a reasonable bus network. Cycling is popular in the flatter south of the island.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Mallorca?
May, June, and September are the sweet spots — warm swimming weather without the July/August peak crowds and extreme heat. April offers pleasant walking conditions in the Tramuntana mountains. October remains warm enough for beach days and is quieter.
Which part of Mallorca has the best beaches?
The east and south coast (Cala d'Or, Cala Mondragó, Es Trenc) have some of the most beautiful beaches — clear turquoise water in protected coves. The northwest coast is dramatic but less suited for swimming. The south is more accessible but busier.
Is Mallorca good for hiking?
Excellent — the Serra de Tramuntana UNESCO mountain range offers world-class hiking, particularly the Dry Stone Route (GR221) which crosses the island. Spring wildflowers and cooler temperatures make March–May the best season for walking.
Should I visit Palma de Mallorca?
Absolutely — Palma is one of Spain's finest cities and often overlooked by beach-focused visitors. The Gothic cathedral, the Es Baluard Museum, the old town tapas bars, and the waterfront are all worth a full day.
Do I need a hire car in Mallorca?
A hire car significantly improves the Mallorca experience — buses serve main resort areas but the island's most beautiful coves, mountain villages, and inland routes are only accessible by car. Roads are good and driving is straightforward.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Mallorca completely changed my opinion of the Balearics — we stayed in Deià, hiked the Tramuntana, ate excellent seafood in Sóller, and discovered beaches so beautiful they barely seemed real. Nothing like the package holiday Mallorca of reputation.

September is perfect — still warm, the beaches are manageable, and the mountain villages are blissfully quiet. The drive from Palma to Formentor cape was one of the most beautiful roads I've driven in Europe.

★★★★☆
A brilliant base for hiking in the Tramuntana in spring — wildflowers on the mountain paths, views to the sea from every ridge, and incredibly good value outside peak season. Palma for a day was a genuine revelation.
