Baroque spires and the best beer in Europe

About Prague

Prague survived the 20th century's architectural catastrophes largely intact, and its medieval and baroque centre is one of the most beautiful in the world. The Charles Bridge at dawn before the crowds is magical. And the Czech food and beer scene is excellent value.

Prague is Central Europe's crown jewel — a Gothic and baroque city that survived the 20th century's upheavals with its medieval core almost entirely intact, and now wears its beauty with a slightly self-aware charm. The Old Town Square, the Charles Bridge at dawn, and the castle district above the river are each extraordinary in isolation; together they make Prague one of the most cinematically perfect cities on earth. The beer is exceptional, the svíčková is a revelation, and the prices are a gift.

Best areas to stay in Prague

Staré Město (Old Town)
The preserved medieval heart of Prague — the astronomical clock, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter (Josefov), and the most concentrated architectural beauty in the city.
Malá Strana (Lesser Town)
The baroque neighbourhood below Prague Castle — cobbled lanes, hidden gardens, excellent restaurants, and the most atmospheric viewpoints over the Charles Bridge.
Prague Castle (Hradčany)
The largest ancient castle complex in the world, perched above the river and containing St Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and panoramic views over the entire city.
Vinohrady & Žižkov
Prague's most vibrant residential neighbourhoods, increasingly popular for their independent restaurants, craft beer bars, and authentic local atmosphere far from tourist crowds.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Prague?
April to June and September to October offer the most pleasant weather — warm enough to enjoy the outdoor café terraces without summer's oppressive heat and tourist crush. Christmas markets (late November–December) are magical. January and February are cold but very quiet.
Is Prague expensive?
Prague is one of Western and Central Europe's best value capitals — excellent accommodation, food, beer, and culture cost significantly less than equivalent Western European cities. Czech koruna (CZK) is the currency; beware of tourist traps offering bad exchange rates.
How do I get to Prague?
Václav Havel Airport (PRG) has direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and most UK regional airports with British Airways, easyJet, Czech Airlines, and Wizz Air. Flights are frequent and cheap.
What is the Prague Card and is it worth it?
The Prague Card offers free entry to many top attractions including the Castle District and public transport. It represents good value if you plan to visit multiple paid sites and use the metro frequently — calculate based on your itinerary.
Is Prague safe for tourists?
Prague is generally very safe. The main concerns are pickpocketing around Charles Bridge and Old Town Square, and scam taxis from Václav Havel Airport — use the FIX taxi service or Bolt/Uber from the airport.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Prague in autumn is absolutely gorgeous — golden light on the baroque spires, fewer tourists, and the most outstanding svíčková beef in a centuries-old cellar restaurant. The Charles Bridge at 6am with morning mist on the river is one of the great European moments.

We visited for a long weekend and immediately started planning a return — Prague is just extraordinarily beautiful and remarkably affordable. The craft beer scene in Žižkov is exceptional and completely removed from the tourist trail.

Christmas market Prague is absolutely wonderful — mulled wine in the Old Town Square with snow on the Gothic spires and Christmas carols echoing off the medieval buildings. Not to be missed in December.
