About Crete
Crete is Greece at its most substantial. The island is large enough to have its own distinct culture shaped by Minoan civilisation — the oldest in Europe. The Samaria Gorge is one of Europe's great hikes. The beaches of Elafonissi and Balos are genuinely extraordinary.

Crete is the island that refuses to be reduced to a simple beach holiday — the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) rise to 2,500m and offer serious alpine hiking, the Samaria Gorge is one of Europe's great canyon walks, the Minoan palace complexes at Knossos and Phaistos are among the continent's most fascinating archaeological sites, and the local cuisine — from dakos salad to lamb with stamnagathi greens — is one of the Mediterranean's most characterful. It's Greece's largest and most complex island, and it rewards extended exploration.
Best areas to stay in Crete
Chania
Crete's most beautiful town — a Venetian harbour, Ottoman-era lighthouse, excellent restaurants in the old town, and the best base for hiking the Samaria Gorge.
Rethymno
A charming town with a magnificent Venetian fortress, beautiful old town streets, and a long sandy beach — the most photogenic of Crete's main towns.
Heraklion & Knossos
The capital city and gateway to the Minoan civilisation — the Archaeological Museum (the finest Minoan collection in the world) and the Knossos palace site.
Elafonisi & West Crete
The remote southwestern lagoon of Elafonisi with its pink sand beach is among Greece's most beautiful; the surrounding landscapes of olive groves and gorges are magnificent.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Crete?
May to June and September to October are ideal — warm enough for swimming without July/August crowds and intense heat. Spring brings wildflowers to the mountains; autumn extends the swimming season with warm seas.
Which part of Crete should I visit?
The north coast has the most developed resorts (Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno); the south coast is wilder and more remote (Matala, Loutro, Paleochora — some only accessible by boat or foot). Split your time between north and south for the full Cretan experience.
How long is the Samaria Gorge hike?
16km one-way through Europe's longest gorge, taking 4–7 hours depending on pace. The hike is open May–October; book boat transfer from Agia Roumeli back to Chora Sfakion at the southern end, as the village has no road access.
What is the best archaeological site in Crete?
Knossos (near Heraklion) is the most famous — the reconstructed Minoan palace is evocative if controversial in its restorations. Phaistos (south coast) is less visited, more atmospheric, and arguably more authentically presented.
Is Crete good for families?
Excellent — the north coast has calm, shallow beaches, superb water parks, good family resort infrastructure, and the history and activities cater to all ages. Aquaworld near Heraklion is particularly good for younger children.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
May in Crete with wildflowers on the mountain paths and almost no tourists was extraordinary — we hiked the Samaria Gorge under perfect blue skies and then ate the freshest seafood on the beach at Loutro afterwards. Perfect in every way.

Crete in September is outstanding — the sea was 25°C, the countryside was golden, and Chania old town in the evening without summer crowds was genuinely magical. The local food here is among the best I've eaten in Greece.

★★★★☆
Elafonisi lagoon in October was almost deserted — pink sand, shallow warm water, and an otherworldly quality that earns it Greece's most beautiful beach designation easily. The drive through the mountains to reach it was equally spectacular.
