About Sydney
Sydney is the city that proves you can have a world-class cultural life and a world-class beach in the same postcode. The harbour is extraordinary. Bondi is famous for a reason. The food fuelled by proximity to some of the world's best produce is exceptional.

Sydney is the city that perfected the relationship between urbanity and coastline — the Harbour Bridge and Opera House are genuinely among the most beautiful pieces of architecture on earth, and then there are ninety-something beaches within city limits, each more improbably beautiful than the last. It has the confidence of a world city and the ease of a coastal town, a food culture built on the Pacific Rim, and a quality of light that photographers come specifically to capture. The fact that it's far away is the only imperfection.
Best areas to stay in Sydney
Circular Quay & The Rocks
The historic harbour heart of Sydney — the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, ferry terminals, and the cobbled colonial streets of The Rocks with excellent restaurants and weekend markets.
Bondi Beach
Sydney's most famous beach strip — an irreplaceable Australian cultural institution, with the spectacular coastal cliff walk to Coogee as an essential morning activity.
Surry Hills & Newtown
Sydney's most vibrant inner-city neighbourhoods — exceptional coffee, diverse restaurants, independent bookshops, and the most authentic local atmosphere away from tourist Sydney.
Manly
A self-contained beach town reached by the magnificent harbour ferry — surf beach, ocean pool, and a relaxed northern beaches character distinct from the inner city.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Sydney?
September to November (spring) and March to May (autumn) offer warm temperatures without peak summer heat and crowds. December to February is summer — beach season, vibrant atmosphere, but school holidays bring higher prices and busy beaches.
How do I get from Sydney Airport to the city?
The Airport Link train connects Sydney Airport to the CBD in around 13 minutes — cheap, direct, and reliable. Uber and taxis are readily available but slower and more expensive. The train runs regularly from 5am to midnight.
Can I swim at Bondi Beach year-round?
Yes — even in winter (June–August) Bondi's infamous ocean pool (Icebergs) is open and hardy locals swim daily. Summer (December–February) is the classic beach season with warm water temperatures around 22–24°C.
Is Sydney expensive?
Sydney is one of the more expensive cities in the Asia-Pacific region, though UK visitors find the current exchange rate generally favourable. Eating in inner-city suburbs like Newtown or Glebe offers excellent value; eating in tourist hotspots around the Opera House is costly.
What is the best way to see Sydney Harbour?
The public ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is one of the world's great commuter ferry rides and a spectacular way to see the harbour for the price of a transit ticket. The BridgeClimb is extraordinary but expensive.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Sydney completely exceeded expectations — we watched the sunset from Mrs Macquarie's Chair with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the same frame and it simply didn't look real. The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee the next morning was equally extraordinary.

March in Sydney is perfect — beach weather without the Christmas crush. The Newtown food scene is genuinely world-class and the Manly ferry ride at dusk with a cold beer in hand was one of those simple travel moments I'll never forget.

Incredible city but January is pricey and beaches are heaving. Worth every dollar though — the New Year's Eve fireworks were the most spectacular I've ever seen and the quality of life here is staggering. We extended our trip by a week.
